The 2015 Doctoral Completion Grant awarded to Mr A. Weir and Mr G. A Hossaini

Mr A Weir is currently at Oxford University, completing his doctorate in History and Theology. The title of his thesis is ‘Prophetic Knowledge in the English Enlightenment, 1688 – 1714’. The thesis addresses how knowledge generated by Enlightenment trends and thinkers subsumed knowledge passed by God to humanity via His prophets. He has gained a first class degree in Theology from the University of Birmingham before winning an AHRC scholarship to the University of Warwick. At Warwick he read for a MA in History with a focus on the European Enlightenment and the History of Medicine, subsequently gaining a distinction. This lead to his current AHRC scholarship at Oxford University. To view an abstract please click here

Mr Ghulam A Hossaini is currently working on his dissertation entitled ‘Effects of the Rising of Safavid Dynasty on the Shī‘a-Sunnī Relations in Herat’. He was born in Mazar-e Sharif, Afghanistan, but went to school and graduated in 1996 in Mashhad. He then moved to Qom and attended the Jami‘at al-Mustafa at Qom, where he received a BA in Religions and Islamic Sects, and his MA in Islamic Sects. Later he attended the Ahl al-Bayt University in Tehran, where he received a second MA in History of Shi’ite Islam. His dissertation in Jami‘at al-Mustafa was published in 2008. He then started a PhD in Islamic Studies at the University of Goettingen, Germany. To view an abstract please click here

The Doctoral Completion grant worth up to £2500 is an open competition inviting non-AMI doctoral students who are within one year of submission of their PhD dissertations to apply. Any researchers who have the potential to impact mainstream academia and whose projects reflect and positively contribute to the research aims of the Institute will be considered for the support needed to assist in the completion of their projects.
