This course introduces students to key historical figures and themes within the study of Islamic mysticism, familiarising them with key concepts and foundational texts of Islamic spirituality. From the second-year students study Ibn Sina’s al-Ishārāt wa-l-tanbīhāt and its commentary by Naṣīr al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī, giving them an appreciation of the affinity between philosophy and mysticism. In the third and fourth years, a technical study of Dāwūd al-Qayṣarī’s masterpiece, Muqaddima is undertake providing a discursive introduction to the thought of Ibn ʿArabī.
