Muslim theology is concerned with fundamental religious beliefs that an individual must subscribe to in order to qualify as a Muslim. Students are introduced to the diversity of thought and the various schools of theology including Muʿtazila, ʾAshāʿira and Maturidi. The course then explores rational justifications for classical Shi’i doctrines like the justice of God, Prophethood, Imamology and eschatology. Students will primarily engage with ʿAllāma Ḥillī’s commentary Bāb Hādī ʿAshar and Kashf al-Murād fī Sharḥ Tajrīd al-Iʿtiqād.
