This course gives a detailed exposition of the sources, methodology and approaches to the study of Islamic history. Students will engage with the works of Muslim scholars in addition to the criticisms levelled by orientalists. Divided into the three modules, students will begin by examining the context in which Islam emerged and the pivotal social and spiritual events during the lifetime of Prophet Mohammad. Thereafter, students will engage in a critical examination of the key contributions during the Umayyad and Ottoman era.
