AMI hosts its annual Interfaith Big Iftar and Eid Celebration in Conjunction with the Universal Peace Federation

On Tuesday 9th April 2024, AMI hosted its annual Big Iftar and Eid Celebration in conjunction with the Universal Peace Federation, drawing an eclectic crowd of over 200 attendees from diverse backgrounds and faiths. The event celebrated the theme ‘Fostering Peace and Harmony Among Faiths’ through a series of enlightening talks by representatives from various religious traditions, complemented by peaceful songs, communal prayers, and an Iftar (breaking of the fast) meal. This year’s celebration was particularly special as it coincided with the night of Eid, featuring henna for women and children, a symbolic and beloved tradition of Eid.

The event featured an impressive line-up of speakers including:

  • Dr. David Earle, the Midlands representative and a Director of the Universal Peace Federation in the UK, and Project Coordinator for the Religious Youth Service.
  • Kuldip Singh Ubhi, UK National President of the Namdhari Sikhs, a recipient of the Universal Peace Federation’s ‘Ambassador for Peace Award’ and a Board Member of SACRE in Birmingham & Sandwell.
  • Father Abba Tiruneh, a community minister and priest at St. Martin’s Church in Birmingham’s bustling city center.
  • Vandna Ray, a representative of the Hindu faith on SACRE.
  • Ely Stanton, from the Progressive Synagogue and a member of Nisa Nashim, which fosters dialogue between Jewish and Muslim women.
  • Shaykh Arif Abdulhussain, director of Al-Mahdi Institute and a prominent scholar and public speaker in advanced Islamic studies.

The talks were followed by songs of peace by Ann Jones, a professional musician and director of ‘In Her Shoes,’ an organisation that empowers women through music and storytelling.

The evening also featured a special screening of AMI’s 30-year documentary, highlighting the journey of Al-Mahdi Institute over thr past three decades, followed by a Q&A session with Shaykh Arif Abdulhussain, facilitated by Adam Khimji.
