AMI’s Dr Hashim Bata took part in the second Uṣūl Workshop of the Law and Learning in Shiʿi Islam (LAWALISI) project

AMI’s Dr Hashim Bata took part in the second Uṣūl Workshop of the Law and Learning in Shiʿi Islam (LAWALISI) project hosted by Professor Robert Gleave of Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, University of Exeter on the 13-14 March 2017.
The workshop examined the concept of khabar al-wāḥid (solitary narrations) in uṣūl al-fiqh from a range of different intellectual traditions; with a particular emphasis on reading Imāmī Shīʿī thought within the broader context of different Muslim traditions of legal theory.
Dr. Bata read and discussed the treatment of khabar al-wāḥid found in Mohammad Rida Muẓaffar’s Uṣūl al-fiqh. The discussion highlighted Muẓaffar’s critical reception of different conceptions and arguments for the authority of khabar al-wāḥid through the convention of rational people (bana al-ʿuqalā).
Other readings on khabar al-wāḥid discussed in the sessions and presented by colleagues came from texts including:
-Ibn Ḥazm (d.1064), al-Iḥkām (Tariq al-Timimi)
-Al-Ghazālī (d.1111), al-Mustaṣfā (Ziad Bou Akl)
-Al-Tūnī (d.1661), al-Wāfiyya, (Mehrdad Ali)
