AMI Student Ahmer Shah delivers hawza modules virtually in Urdu

In January 2017, Al-Mahdi Institute provided virtual teaching support to Dairat al-Ma’arif, a hawza institution in Pakistan, aimed at empowering women and training them to become the torch-bearers of Islamic morals and principles in society. AMI’s fourth-year hawza student; Ahmer Shah, delivered an ‘Introduction to Usul al-Fiqh‘ module in Urdu over 14 weeks to a group of 16-18 year old students as part of their two-year Pre-hawza programme.

The module consisted of two parts; the first part of the module introduced students to Muslim legal theory, also known as principles of Islamic jurisprudence (uṣūl al-fiqh) and focused on the main themes discussed in classical legal theory, together with the technical language and terminology of uṣūl al-fiqh. The second part of the module consisted of uṣūl al-fiqh reading, in which students read a classical Arabic work on Muslim legal theory, in order to grasp the wide range of legal terminology and ideas involved. The module has now approached completion and students will be assessed on the module in the form of a written exam.

AMI also provided two other modules; Post-Prophet and Ummayad History and Ulum al-Qur’an taught in Urdu by Dr Mohammad Khalid as part of the Pre-hawza programme. These modules were also taught over 14 weeks and are currently being assessed.

Dairat al-Ma’arif is funded by a charitable organisation called the Hussain Trust, a selfless endeavor to provide homes for the desolate, feed the hungry, provide orphans a safe sanctuary and above all, an enterprise intended to spread compassion, equity, and tolerance as decreed by Allah (SWT). Having studied intensely on AMI’s Four-year Hawza programme over the past few years, Ahmer Shah hopes to continue his pursuit of teaching to share the valuable skills and knowledge he has gained from his studies at AMI for the betterment of the Muslim communities worldwide.

As part of the Four-year hawza programme, students are not only introduced to the core subjects within the traditional hawza curriculum but are also equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge base to help them pave their way towards public speaking, leadership, teaching academia and more.
