AMI hosts roundtable discussion on ‘Justice and Ethics in Shi’i Thought’ in collaboration with ICJECA Workshop 2017, Mashhad

On Thursday 6th April, AMI hosted a pre workshop discussion on the topic of ‘Justice and Ethics in Shi’i Thought, from theoretical foundations to Sharia implications’ in collaboration with ICJECA International Conference on Justice and Ethics at Ferdowsi University of Mashhad. The session was attended by AMI staff and students and members of the public.
Opening with a presentation by Dr Jafar Morvarid (Ferdowsi University of Mashhad) and followed with papers presented by Shaykh Arif Abdulhussein and Dr Ali-Reza Bhojani of Al-Mahdi Institute. The session was the first part to the workshop which will be concluded in Iran between 15th – 16th April 2017
The papers presented at the session were; (click titles for abstracts)
“Hermeneutic Elements in the Methodology of Shi’i Ijtihad: the Spirit of the Book, the Justice as the Purpose of Sharia” by Dr Jafar Morvarid (Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Islamic Theology, Faculty of Theology, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad)
“A justice-orientated ‘liberal inclusivism’; Mirza Qummi on the soteriological implications of false belief in matters of fundamental doctrine” by Dr Ali-Reza Bhojani (Post Doctoral Research Fellow, Al-Mahdi Institute)
“Justice and Ethics in an Existential Framework” by Shaykh Arif Abdulhussein (Senior Lecturer and Director, Al-Mahdi Institute)
Under the umbrella of ‘Justice and Ethics in Shi’i Thought’, themes discussed during the session varied from looking at the unique understanding posed by Mirza Qummi on liberal inclusivism and its impact on the Ahl al-Sunna and Shia theologians in Dr Bhojani’s paper, to Dr Morvarid’s discussion on the different hermeneutical approaches to Justice amongst the Usuli Shia scholars. Shaykh Arif Abdulhussein’s proposal criticised the Adliyah and proposed an existential understanding of Justice. The presentations were followed by extensive discussion and deliberations from the participants in attendance including questions and answers based on the papers. These sessions will be concluded at the ICJECA Workshop on 15th-17th April 2017 in Mashhad Iran, after which recordings of the papers will be available to view on our YouTube channel.
