On the 10th of October 2014, the Al-Mahdi Institute held a book launch event to celebrate its latest publication;
“The Special Characteristics of the Leader of the Faithful – Ali b. Abi Talib” (Khaṣā‘iṣ Amīri-l-Mu‘minīn ‘Alī b. Abī Ṭālib)by Aḥmad b. Shu‘ayb al-Nasā’ī
Translated by Sheikh Michael Mumisa, a PhD candidate and scholar at Trinity Hall, University of Cambridge, the publication is the first ever English translation of the original text; ‘Khaṣā‘iṣ Amīri-l-Mu‘minīn ‘Alī b. Abī Ṭālib’ compiled by Aḥmad b. Shu‘ayb al-Nasā’ī. Written by the “most learned scholar of his generation in Egypt,” ‘Khaṣā‘iṣ Amīri-l-Mu‘minīn’ is a compilation of hadith from Sunni traditions about the unique status of Ali b. Abi Talib. Al-Nasā’ī, classed as one of the ‘Mutashaddidin’ (extremely strict) scholars of hadith literature, wrote the book to guide the people who had misunderstood the status of Ali b. Abi Talib and to clear any misconceptions distancing the different schools of thought.
Attended by academics, scholars from different Muslim schools of thought, AMI faculty, students and interested members of the public, the publication was very well received by all the guests and was the talking point of every conversation. The translator, Sheikh Michael Mumisa provided an insightful introduction of the book along with a brief talk about the contemporary relevance of this classical work in the context of current intra-Muslim tensions followed by an interactive Question and Answer session with Sheikh Mumisa and the guests. There was also an opportunity for Intra-faith dialogue between the guests and a chance to communicate with people from all walks of life accompanied by a buffet dinner.
