AMI signs agreement with University of Birmingham for Masters in Islamic Studies

After months of planning, meetings and paperwork; AMI signed an agreement with the University of Birmingham (UoB) to allow its students to obtain a Postgraduate MA in Islamic Studies in the final year of the Hawza programme. This means, students who successfully complete the first three years of the Hawza Programme (via the in-house or distance learning route) will now have the opportunity to obtain a Postgraduate Masters degree in Islamic Studies (in-house only) awarded by and studied at the University of Birmingham (UoB), in the fourth and final year of the Hawza Programme.

The arrangement will not only allow students to gain a firm grounding in the traditional Islamic sciences (taught at the hawzas of Qom and Najaf) during the first three years of the hawza programme at AMI, but will also allow students to engage with material that is at the forefront of contemporary academic research in Islamic Studies, during the MA degree at University of Birmingham.

The first three years of the Hawza Programme at AMI will equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to read, analyse and contextualise classical Arabic texts used in the study of Fiqh (Jurisprudence), Usul al-Fiqh (legal theory), Qur'anic studies, Islamic Theology, Islamic Philosophy and more.

Following this, students who successfully complete the the first three years will have the opportunity to continue on to the MA in Islamic Studies degree at UoB which will introduce students to the traditional and modern approaches in the study of Islam and other modules such as; Medieval Arabic Thought, Thematic Study of Shi’ism: History, Doctrines and Religious Authority, Islam in Europe, Muslim Thinkers of the Western World and more.
